Mercado called police after stabbing himself in the leg. When officers arrived, Mercado appeared outside his home and picked up a rifle. Officers told him to drop it, but he pointed the gun at police. Four officers, who had expereince ranging from less than a year on the force to 13 years, fired their weapons at Mercado, who ran back inside the home. Police formed a perimtere around the home and entered it more than an hour after the shooting to find Mercado dead.
