Bernhardt had blocked part of a driveway with household items. He was distraught after someone cut the gas line to his tractor, which as also stuck in the driveway. Bernhardt suffered from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, according to his wife. Police tried to get Bernhardt to move the items from the driveway, but he became agitated and pointed a crossbow at the officers. Ofc. Stanley Kaina fired three shots that killed Bernhardt.
