Whitney was wanted for stabbing a woman at an apartment complex on Banyan Drive. Shortly after the stabbing, Whitney reportedly stole a truck from a crew of road surveyors. Police later found the truck pointed into oncoming traffic on Highway 11. Whitney "failed to comply with lawful orders" of an officer and drove at police when he was shot.
