Sanchez and a 19-year-old female companion were sleeping in a stolen vehicle outside an Aiea subdivision when police knocked on the windows. A lawsuit filed by his family says Sanchez was shot when he reached for the keys. Police at the time said Sanchez refused to exit the vehicle and then attempted to evade them, dragging a pair of officers across the parking lot, ramming the truck into two townhouses and a parked vehicle, according to a Honolulu Star-Advertiser report of the police account.
